The business model is the first message

Your prices, terms and conduct speak before any text does. Communication can reveal what your business is. It cannot fake what your business is not.

As it is usually taught: marketing is how you communicate the value of your offer. Write good copy, choose good channels, repeat.

What it really asks of you comes earlier. Before anyone reads a word from you, your business model has already spoken. Your prices, your terms, your return policy, how you answer when something goes wrong: these are messages, and they are louder than anything you will ever write. Communication can reveal what your business is. It cannot fake what your business is not.

A promise you cannot break is worth more

Think of a company like Costco. Reasonable markups, and a returns policy so generous it costs them real money. That policy is not a marketing campaign. It is a promise made structural: the company has arranged its own affairs so that breaking the promise is harder than keeping it. Customers feel the difference between a slogan and a structure, even when they cannot name it.

You can do the same thing at your own scale. A fair price that does not need to be renegotiated every year. Published specifications a buyer can check. Answering the hard question in writing, on your site, before the buyer asks it. Each of these is a promise made structural, and each one does marketing work every day without a budget.

Marketing cannot outrun the offer

If the offer is weak, better copy makes things worse: it brings more people to the same disappointment, faster. If the offer is strong, plain words are enough, because the words only need to point at something real.

Is this true everywhere? In consumer markets it is a tendency, and one that is argued about. In the markets this tutorial serves it is close to a rule. When a business or a public buyer runs a formal purchase, your prices, terms, warranty and record are scored in a table before anyone reads your marketing. The offer speaks first because the buying process reads it first.

This is why the tutorial starts here and not at the five questions. The questions sharpen a communication. They cannot repair a business model. When a communication feels impossible to write honestly, the problem is usually not the writing.

This week

Write down the three structural promises your business already keeps: things a customer gets from how you operate, not from what you say. If you cannot find three, you have found your first marketing project, and it is not a text.
